Islamists vow to stop Miss World pageant, with or without bikinis

They must not like sarongs either.

To absolutely no one’s surprise, hard-line Muslim groups in Indonesia say replacing the bikini contest with a segment where contestants show off in sarongs isn’t enough to make the Miss World pageant acceptable in the world’s largest Muslim country.

missworldbikinisThose radical feminists at the Muslim fundamentalist group Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia think the whole project is still too much like prostitution to be acceptable.

“Supporting this event is the same as supporting the selling of women’s bodies,” a spokesman for the group told the Jakarta Globe.

“Women are lowering themselves by allowing themselves to be turned into objects, to be stared at and have their bodies measured.”

The Islamist Reform Movement (Garis) also doesn’t think the bikini ban is enough.

“They will still wear outfits that will encourage sex and immoral acts,” its leader told the Globe.

The Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia told the Globe the group is planning to protest the pageant (no doubt peacefully). And since the Islamist Reform Movement (Garis) occasionally makes Western headline by attacking Christian churches in Indonesia, it’s likely to protest, too.

So is the “Miss World competition: Jakarta edition” going to come off?

As the Jakarta Globe noted, “Vocal protesters have succeeded in getting events cancelled in the past in Indonesia … Last year, pop sensation Lady Gaga axed a concert after hard-liners threatened to burn down the venue and criticized her for wearing only ‘a bra and panties.’”

A sarong probably wouldn’t have worked for her, either.
