Fla. GOP chairman gets involved in Democrats’ annual dinner

Is former Gov. Charlie Crist planning to announce a run to return to the Governor’s Mansion during the Demcrats’ annual Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in June?

The chairman of the Republican Party of Florida thinks it’s possible. In an open letter to Sunshine State Democrats on Thursday, RPOF
Chairman Lenny Curry said as much as he asks party members to speak out against the decision by J-J dinner organizers to keep former state Sen. Nan Rich, a Weston Democrat, from speaking during the event.

charliecristRich was the first Democrat to officially announced her candidacy to run against Gov. Rick Scott next year – and remains the only one
anyone’s ever heard of.

To put it mildly, many suspect Crist will be joining her in the race before too long.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Florida Democratic Party Political Director Christian Ulvert said the decision isn’t targted at Rich
personally – or politically.

“But it’s after hearing from several folks that attend J-J every year, they made it clear that the program at J-J needs to be
streamlined,” he told the paper.

So to keep things moving, speakers at the event will be limited to U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Sen. Bill Nelson, and Julian
Castro, the San Antonio mayor who delivered the keynote speech at last year’s Democratic National Convention.

“We really want to give our national speaker who’s coming a great opportunity,” Ulvert told the Sun-Sentinel. “This isn’t a slight to
Nan Rich.”

Curry isn’t buying it.

In his letter to Democrats, a more-in-sorrow-than-in-anger piece of avuncular advice, Curry praises Rich as an “experienced spokesperson for Democratic ideology in Florida.”

“It must be disappointing to see your Chairwoman, Allison Tant, put the interests of big-dollar donors ahead of a mere five minutes for
Florida’s leading champion of liberal causes,” Curry writes.

He then suggests the whole thing is a set up the former Republican governor claim his new party’s front-runner status with a dinner
surprise.

“But it also may be that Tant is working with Charlie Crist to set up a possible gubernatorial candidacy announcement at the
Jefferson-Jackson dinner. Who knows?”
