A Margate family is asking for the public’s help in finding a man last seen on a bank surveillance tape May 19.
William “Billy” Manno, 45, had recently been separated from his wife and 13-year-old daughter because of a gambling problem, family members said.
His last contact with his family was when he left the home of a cousin with whom he’d been staying early on May 17.
Since then, he was recorded withdrawing cash from ATM machines at the TB Bank and BB&T bank in the 1600 block of Hallandale Beach Boulevard in Hallandale Beach, said his sister-in-law, Lisa Mark.
Manno was last recorded at an ATM at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach at 8:38 a.m. May 19, Mark said.
Manno’s vehicle, a 2001 Dodge Caravan, was found abandoned in the 16000 block of Loxahatchee Road on Saturday afternoon by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers making a routine license plate check, according to Mark.
The vehicle showed no signs of foul play, and Manno’s clothes, identification and keys were inside, the worried sister-in-law said. A police-dog search of the area around the vehicle turned up nothing unusual.
Mark and her sister, Manno’s wife, Laurie, painted a picture of a devoted family man and reliable worker who’s been employed for 13 years as a test and balance technician at Richard Flanders Enterprises in Coral Springs.
“This is the guy on the block who taught every kid on the block how to swim,” Laurie Manno said.
But Manno had recently been showing signs of a problem with slot machines, his family said.
“We started to have issues over it,” his wife said.
Since Manno’s disappearance, his parents have traveled from New Hampshire to be part of the search effort, Mark said. The family has distributed missing persons posters and chased down some phone leads, all in the area of Hallandale Beach, Mark said. So far, none have paid off.
Still, the family hasn’t given up hope.
“We’re in a waiting mode,” Mark said.
And if she could get a message to her brother-in-law, what would it be?
“No matter how much somebody screws up their life, there’s nothing his family won’t forgive him for,” she said.
