NY sheriffs stand up to Gov. Cuomo, join lawsuit against gun laws

Several sheriffs in New York have been vocal in their opposition to the recently passed gun measures known as the SAFE Act, but now they have made it official. After filing a brief earlier last week, the New York State Sheriff’s Association have asked to be added to a federal lawsuit originally filed in Buffalo in March, according to CBS 6 in Albany.

Several sheriffs had been called to Gov. Cuomo’s office last month where sheriffs expected to give suggestions on improving the law. Instead, one of the participants said the governor asked the sheriffs not to oppose the measures, then allegedly threatened to remove them from office if they did. Cuomo’s office “strongly” denied any threats were made.

“The sheriffs had concerns. They had suggestions for modifications to the SAFE Act, so we met to talk to them about their ideas for modifications to the SAFE Act,” Cuomo told WIVB4.

“It’s an unenforceable law. I believe it will ultimately be declared to be unconstitutional,” Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard told WIVB4. He vowed not to enforce the laws from the beginning, putting him at odds with the governor.

I'm not familiar with NY policies, so, could someone from NY tell me how the sheriff is put into that office. Elected, or appointed. If he/she is elected, how the hell can cuomo, or any other two-bit mayor, even think that they have the power to "remove" any sheriff or his deputies. Sometimes, some people speak volumes by not saying anything at all! Cuomo, you, and any other politician that supported this asshole bill, should be removed from office; as you don't have the interests of the people in mind, only your agenda. Walk away and don't come back; all of you idiots.

      Our sheriffs are elected

NY State Sheriffs are elected and not appointed. Andy Cuomo is like his father Mario, they believe if THEY think something is good for you, they will just ram a bill through in the dead of night. This law is political at every angle. The good Governor is laying ground work for a presidential run in 2016,and he is looking for help from "O". There 67 counties in NY I believe, and I wonder just how many Sheriff's are against this burdensome legislation ???

  6. Kenneth Geer says:

make those gun laws equal to your officiers as well. See how you like them
