Apparently there’s a poll for everything. A CNN/ORC poll revealed Monday that in the midst of the Internal Revenue Service scandal over targeting those affiliated with the Tea Party movement, the Tea Party group has actually seen their approval ratings rise.
“Politically, the group that may have benefitted the most from last week’s news is the Tea Party movement, which may be getting something akin to a ‘sympathy vote’ for being targeted by the highly unpopular IRS,” CNN polling director Keating Holland said.
The poll shows a favorable opinion of the Tea Party at 37 percent of those surveyed, up 9 points from their 28 percent positive rating in March, and just one percentage point shy of the movement’s all-time high in previous CNN polls, reached twice at the height of the movement in 2010.
While 45 percent still have a negative opinion of the Tea Party, that number is down three points from the previous survey.
The IRS scandal is breathing new life into the tea party movement, according to Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks. He recently told CNN, “You’ve seen a lot more energy and judging from the activity on the social networks, people are pissed off about this.”

More good news on Monday, Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, called for more information from the IRS related to the scrutiny Tea Party groups faced in pursuing tax-exempt status.
The Tea Party Patriots, one of the largest national groups, is planning protests at IRS offices across the country on Tuesday.
The CNN/ORC poll was conducted from May 17-18 among 923 adults. The poll had a 3-point margin of error, according to CNN.
