Gov. Jindal says IRS officials should ‘go to jail’ for violating Constitution

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal kicked off the Virginia Republican convention in Richmond Friday night with criticism toward Washington, and praise for Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia’s GOP nominee for governor.

Jindal told over 14,000 conservatives and tea party followers that Republicans nationwide needed to stop “hand-wringing” and “navel-gazing” and move forward with a message reflecting their principles.

“We need to be a party that fights for 100 percent of the votes,” he said. “Not 53 percent, not 47 percent – 100 percent.”

Jindal had harsh words for the Obama administration, referring to the trio of scandals that have dominated the news in the past week, with a specific reference to the IRS targeting of conservatives for extra scrutiny and prison for those involved.

“It is the IRS, people in a position of public trust, who have violated the Constitution of the United States of America,” Jindal said, according to Politico. “You cannot take the freedom of law-abiding Americans, whether you disagree with them or not, and keep your own freedom. When you do that, you go to jail.”

Jindal and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, chairmen of the Republican Governors Association, sent a letter to the president last week calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS.

“Anyone who believes that this White House, or this Justice Department run by Eric Holder, is willing or capable of investigating this scandal is unhinged from reality,” Jindal noted.

Jindal praised Cuccinelli, who officially accepted the nomination at the convention Saturday.

“We live in a time where too many elected officials stick their finger up in the air to see where the wind is blowing,” Jindal said.

Cuccinelli, the father of seven, faces former Democratic National Committee chairman and Clinton family protege Terry McAuliffe in Virginia’s Nov. 5 gubernatorial election.
