With more than one scandal casting a dark cloud over the White House, President Obama took time off Monday to do some fundraising for the Democratic National Committee. Obama attended not one, but three events, to raise funds to support candidates in the 2014 midterm elections.
The first event was held at the Manhattan home of Hollywood filmmaker Harvey Weinstein. About 65 guests, including Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, attended at a cost of $16,200 to $20,000 per person. White House staffers Dan Pfeiffer and Jay Carney also attended, according to CBS News.
Obama spoke to the crowd, as reported by the press pool:
“I genuinely believe there are Republicans out there who would like to work with us but they’re fearful of their base and they’re concerned about what Rush Limbaugh might say about them. And as a consequence we get the kind of gridlock that makes people cynical about government. My intentions over the next 3 ½ years are to govern. … If there are folks who are more interested in winning elections than they are thinking about the next generation then I want to make sure there are consequences to that.”
The press pool was cleared from the room when Obama was ready to take questions from the guests. So much for transparency.
Obama then left to attend a dinner hosted by Alexandra Stanton, former senior policy adviser to Gov. David Paterson, and her husband, Sam Natapoff. Expected attendance was about 60, with the same ticket price as the previous event.
The third soiree was a joint effort between the DNC and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee benefiting the House Senate Victory Fund. Held at the Waldorf Astoria, about 140 people were expected at a cost ranging from $7,500 to $32,400 per person.
