It might have spoiled Washington Post columnist Ezra Klein’s Sunday with “Weekend Edition,” but Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul wants supporters to help fight what Paul calls the “anti-American globalist” International Small Arms Treaty.
Paul’s email can be found HERE, but Klein’s post is also interesting — for a couple of things it says about the mind of liberal journalism.
First is it’s arrogance. Describing Paul’s anti-U.N. email as “black helicopter stuff,” Klein asks: “What’s the upside for Paul to put his name on e-mails like this one, which landed in my inbox this morning?”
That’s not just interesting, it’s funny. Paul’s email is a FUNDRAISING BLAST. The upside, or at least the intended upside, is FUNDRAISING. It landed in plenty of other inboxes besides Klein’s – probably at least a few of them belonging to people who agree with Paul.
The better question is, what’s the downside? That someone like Ezra Klein might sniff in his morning coffee and bat out a meanie, faux-sophisticate blog post critiquing your style?
Paul is said to be considering a run for president in 2016. Richard Nixon might not have been perfect, but he was a pretty canny politician. And his advice for Republican candidates was, “you have to run as far as you can to the right” to win in a GOP primary, not “you have to run as far as you can to Ezra Klein.”
The second interesting thing about Klein’s post is that it relies on the “fact-checker” PolitiFact to prove Paul’s wrong about his opposition to the treaty.
The PolitiFact article Klein links to says:
“So, the United States plans to participate in a conference possibly resulting in a treaty regulating the international arms trade, but the Obama administration has said it won’t support limits on the Second Amendment …
“We found no evidence of Obama or (former Secretary of State Hillary) Clinton indicating they want the UN conference on an arms trade treaty to ban the use of firearms; the recent speech by an administration underling states the government will not back a treaty that infringes on the Second Amendment.”
How could anyone doubt the word of President Obama and Hillary Clinton?
