Poor polling for Congress won’t help Obama, Pelosi

For Democrats, the good news isn’t good enough.

A Gallup poll released Thursday shows only 16 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing.

That’s good for White House speechwriters, who can continue to feed the Teleprompter One more nauseatingly familiar lines like, “How can Republicans stand in the way of something 90 percent of Americans agree on?”

But the same poll showed 47 percent of those responding actually like the job their representative is doing. That’s bad for the White House occupant, whose hopes for a “progressive” legacy rely on the return of a Democratic majority to the House of Representatives.

The poll itself isn’t surprising. If individual representatives didn’t have a fair amount of support among voters in their districts, they wouldn’t be representatives in the first place.

But it makes a lot more sense when you go further into the results and find the respondents who know the name and party affiliation of their congressman approve of that congressman by a whopping 62 percent.

So, it’s people who couldn’t be bothered to know their representative’s name or politics – the kind of “low-information” voter Democrats tend to maximize in presidential election years – who are mainly dissatisfied with their representative and likely to vote against him.

But it’s an off-year congressional election — without Obama’s magnetism pulling an ill-informed electorate to the polls — that bodes very well for Republicans in 2014. It bodes very ill for the return of Nancy Pelosi to the speaker’s chair.

So, let the Left get their kicks railing about how much Americans hate Congress.

The rest of us just have one more reason to thank God for James Madison and the summer of ’87.
