The fact that the Obama administration’s foreign policy is a total and abject failure was demonstrated Tuesday at the Kremlin when Russian President Vladimir Putin kept Secretary of State John Kerry waiting for a previously scheduled meeting — for three hours.
The subject of Tuesday’s meeting was one that should have been of mutual interest to our countries: the quelling of unrest in the Middle East, beginning with Syria.
As important as the meeting was to the United States, when the two men finally met, the Russian leader contemptuously gave Kerry’s concerns little if any attention. Instead, Putin appeared distracted, uninterested and even dismissive as he played with his pen during their encounter, according to the Mail Online.
I don’t profess to be anything approaching a Kerry fan, but as our country’s number one diplomat, he should command complete respect from world leaders. The fact that he didn’t get it from Russia’s president isn’t Kerry’s fault, however. It came as the natural result of a flawed foreign policy that was initiated at the outset of the Obama administration.
The die was cast the moment President Obama embarked on his so-called “apology tour.” “America has shown arrogance and been dismissive and even derisive,” he said, and then noted America’s failings.
Then there was the repeated bowing to other — not to mention lesser — world leaders and even the mayor of Tampa, which irritated conservatives to no end. When administration officials claimed he wasn’t so much bowing as he was meeting shorter leaders eye-to-eye, the president’s critics noted that he did not bow to England’s very short Queen Elizabeth.
There’s also the president’s willingness to capitulate, most recently demonstrated by our removal of the East European missile defense system at Russia’s request as the Washington Post reported.
Whether out of a desire to be liked or from a genuine feeling of subservience, his display isn’t universally given.
Witness the return of the bust of Sir Winston Churchill to the British people, which said British people — America’s most loyal European ally — regarded as an affront.
Then there’s the time Obama left a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu without warning or explanation. The president reportedly let the prime minister cool his heels while Obama enjoyed dinner with his family. Israel is not just America’s most loyal ally in the Middle East — she’s our only one.
For all of George W. Bush’s faults, he knew that it took respect to get other world leaders to listen. He also knew that respect often does not mean “being liked.”
Putin’s behavior to Kerry should be regarded as a slap in the face to the United States. It’s also something we should get accustomed to — it’s all a natural progression to the Obama administration’s policy of appeasement.
