The head of the Democratic Party in South Carolina insulted Republican Gov. Nikki Haley‘s Indian heritage at a party gathering in Columbia on Friday.
According to a “tweet” posted Friday by Yahoo political reporter Chris Moody, the state party chair Dick Harpootlian is reported to have said the Democrats will take on the incumbent governor in the next gubernatorial race and send ‘Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from.’
Unfortunately for Harpootlian, it was also captured on video. Why he has not resigned already is a mystery.
One can only imagine the national outcry in the media had a GOP party leader directed such disparaging racial overtones toward an Indian-American woman.
A spokesman for Haley said the comment seemed to insult her heritage.
“Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend coming from the South Carolina Democratic Party,” spokesman Rob Godfrey told BuzzFeed.
“Fortunately, the people of South Carolina are better than Harpootlian and his ilk, and we have faith that they will see right through their consistent attempts to play to the lowest common denominator.”
For the record Dick Harpootlian, Haley’s parents are from India, however, she was born in the United States.
