School won’t fire teacher for buying porno book ’50 Shades’ for 14-year-old

A Philadelphia mom was understandably concerned to learn her 14-year-old son’s teacher purchased the adult semi-pornographic book Fifty Shades of Grey for him to read during classroom reading time.

The worldwide best-selling book, which has been dubbed “mommy porn,” is extremely sexually explicit. The characters engage in various forms of dangerous sadomasochistic sex.

Eastern University Academy Charter School teacher Philip Aidoo claimed the purchase was an oversight and the school administration backed him up, according to NBC10.co.

But Maya Ladson, the student’s mother, is not letting it go that easily. She wants him fired.

“I find it highly unlikely that a teacher who teaches reading and has a classroom for sustained silent reading period is unaware of contents of material that he’s giving to the students, let alone the material being pornographic material,” Ladson told NBC10.com.

School officials immediately investigated the complaint from Ladson, who acknowledged her son asked Aidoo for the book, and they filed a grievance with the school’s board of trustees. The case was heard Wednesday resulting in a decision to suspend the teacher for one week without pay.

The book was among other completely appropriate novels purchased online by Aidoo, reportedly with his own money. He said he had never heard of the controversial book and missed the warning label, “mature audiences – high sexual content,” on the front cover.

According to Eastern University Academy Charter School Chief Operating Officer Yvonne Turner, the school plans to move the 9th grader to another class. A new policy has been put in place for the school to approve any purchases for students in the future, she said.

Ladson tells reporters when classes resume on Monday, she and other parents will protest outside the school.
