Just a few minutes before the bomb that ripped his lower legs apart exploded, Jeff Bauman looked into the eyes of the man who sat it down beside him.

In one of the most graphic images of Monday’s bombing in Boston, a bloodied and ashen Bauman is photographed as he is being rushed to an ambulance in a wheelchair as a man wearing a cowboy hat runs alongside him pinching closed a severed artery protruding from his thigh. (AP photo)

Incredibly, it is now reported that this badly injured victim helped the FBI zero in on the men who are responsible for Monday’s attack.

While still in intensive care at Boston Medical Center, Bauman gave the FBI a description of the man he saw, his brother Chris Bauman said. He added that this information helped investigators narrow down whom to look for in hours of video of the attack, according to Bloomberg.

“He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote: ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,’” Chris Bauman said. “I’ve had many times alone with him, and yes, he told me every single detail.”

Jeff Bauman did lose both legs below the knee.
