Three conservative tea party senators have put Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on notice that they will filibuster any bill that could infringe on the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
GOP Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah will hand-deliver a letter to Reid’s office on Tuesday, according to Politico.
“We will oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions,” the letter states.
Reid announced that Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s well-publicized assault weapon ban will not make it to the Senate floor, but a measure calling for universal background checks and ending interstate gun trafficking is expected to emerge after the recess.
Politico’s Jonathan Allen reported:
Conservatives are concerned that once that bill reaches the floor, amendments could stiffen restrictions on gun control.
Moreover, they understand that Reid intends to allow liberal amendments that would limit clip capacity and ban certain assault weapons to be offered — even though they would be defeated — to give Democrats a chance to vote on them. For moderate Democrats in competitive states, that amounts to an opportunity to vote no and show allegiance to gun rights.
This may be one to watch. Turn on CSPAN, invite the neighbors, serve up plenty of pizza, beer and popcorn, and enjoy the show.
