Seven Marines were killed in a Monday night explosion at a military ammunition storage facility at the Hawthorne Army Depot In Nevada, according to Fox News.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wasted little time is using the dead Marines to score political points. During remarks on the Senate floor Tuesday, with no evidence, Reid shamelessly implied sequestration and cut backs in funding were to blame for the accident.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, officials said in a statement from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp LeJeune, N.C.

The Marines were with the North Carolina-based 2nd Marine Division and were killed when a 60-millimeter mortar exploded during a live-fire training exercise at Hawthorne Army Depot as they were preparing to fire it, Fox News reports.

As noted in the first video, NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski reports that Marine Corps officials this afternoon are taking a strong exception to what Harry Reid implied, saying this exercise was “planned well in advance, had nothing to do with the budget cuts. There were no corners cut, and if they couldn’t afford to have all the safety precautions into place, they wouldn’t do the exercise.”

“One Marine Corps official told us a short time ago that he considers this nothing but pure political posturing on the backs of these dead Marines,” Miklaszewski adds.
