Thursday, the 10th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion, marked the opening of a remarkable multi-media exhibit at the Bronx Documentary Center in New York City, described as “From 9/11 to the toppling of Saddam, a Marine’s brutal and poignant handwritten chronicle of the U.S. invasion.”

That description of “Invasion: Diaries and Memories of War in Iraq” came from Foreign Policy Magazine about a collaborative effort of writer Peter Maass and photographer Gary Knight, and based on the diaries of Marine Corps Lt. Tim McLaughlin, whose paths all crossed on the blistering, wind-swept Iraqi desert.

Just as compelling as the McLaughlin diary and the Maass commentary are the photographs taken through Knight’s lens.

The powerful photo expose’, Iraq war Diaries: “His horse was named death.”

Read more at Foreign Policy, and watch the following two videos, where McLaughlin reads entries from his diary.

“Order’s Out,” McLaughlin writes to Victoria’s Secret and readies for battle in Kuwait.

“Rolling into Baghdad,” McLaughlin recalls the taking of the Diyala bridge and the toppling of Saddam’s statue in Firdos Square.
