Tensions between the Boca Raton City Council and the Firefighters’ Union have been brewing, but seem to have escalated since the union pressed to open contract negotiations now, rather than waiting until closer to the current contract’s expiration.
In their last executive session, the Boca Raton City Council voted to postpone action on police or firefighter contracts until they review a consulting firm’s report that will outline financial implications of their negotiations. The contracts are slated to expire at the end of September 2014.
The report was recently commissioned and is expected to take four to six months to complete. In addition, the state legislature is considering a bill which could complicate a municipality’s control over police and firefighter pension growth.
A forum has been scheduled by the Federation of Boca Raton Homeowners’ Associations to discuss the cost of the firefighter pensions and what can be done about them. The group has invited representatives from Boca Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility and from the Firefighters’ Union.
The forum will be held on March 5th at the Boca Raton Community Center, 150 Crawford Blvd., from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The meeting is free and open to the public. Opening statements will be made, then audience questions will be taken.
