Obama’s second-term ‘flexibility’ with Russia begins

Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with Russia’s foreign minister on Saturday while he and his wife, Jill, are in Munich. The No. 1 topic of conversation is expected to be arms reductions.

Obama “believes that there’s room to explore the potential for continued reductions, and that the best way to do so is in a discussion with Russia,” Ben Rhodes, White House deputy national security adviser, told The Washington Times.

The public got a taste of the president’s belief in “room to explore the potential” for arms reductions when he told Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in March to give him time on the issue.

“This is my last election,” Obama was caught on an open mike telling Medvedev. “After my election, I have more flexibility.”

Medvedev responded: “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.”

The Washington Times reported:

Republicans in Congress are wary of Mr. Obama’s plans for arms reduction and missile defense in Europe. Chuck Hagel, the president’s nominee for secretary of defense, was questioned by lawmakers at his confirmation hearing Thursday about his support for the Global Zero nuclear-disarmament movement.

Under the auspices of the group, Mr. Hagel co-authored a report last year that advocates sharp reductions in nuclear weapons and a review of U.S. nuclear policy. Mr. Hagel told senators that any arms-control deal with Russia must be “bilateral and verifiable.”

Now that the election is over and the president has his “flexibility,” Biden is leading the charge on arms reduction with the Russian bear, John “Climate Change” Kerry is our secretary of state, and Chuck “Who, Me Worry?” Hagel may be running defense. What could possibly go wrong?
