Where’s the media in Dem. Sen. Menendez’s underage prostitution scandal?

I don’t know what’s more egregious — that the biased, lame-stream media won’t report on U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s alleged involvement in a prostitution sex scandal or that New Jersey voters re-elected him in November amid such accusations.

I’ll give my home state this: You can’t expect voters to know what’s going on if the major news outlets either won’t cover the story or spin it as a political hack job against the senator.

The Daily Caller has been breaking news for months now of Menendez’s suspected involvement with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. The speculation continues to mount, yet you still won’t see it covered by the major TV networks.

Consider the news you probably didn’t hear about Wednesday. The Miami Herald reported that agents from the FBI and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services raided the West Palm Beach offices of Menendez’s good friend, Dr. Salomon Melgen, looking for, among other things, evidence of suspected ties in the sex scandal. According to the article:

Agents conducted the raid primarily to investigate possible fraudulent billing activities by Melgen’s business. But they could use any evidence they find for the parallel corruption investigation concerning the prostitutes, trips Menendez took on the doctor’s private plane and the senator’s gift disclosures.

By mid-afternoon Wednesday, the Daily Caller had an article slamming other media outlets for nary a word on the story:

If a doctor suspected of providing free trips and underage Dominican Republic prostitutes to a prominent ranking Democratic senator has his West Palm Beach, Fla. offices raided by the FBI, but it’s not picked up by ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC or CNN — did it really happen?

Fox News had something, though. Fox News Senior Judicial Analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano sat with Shepard Smith Wednesday to discuss the potential ties between Menendez and Melgen in the prostitution scandal.

Newsbusters also took a shot at the mainstream media when it played a video skit of comedian Jay Leno riffing on a story much of the rest of the media wouldn’t touch. On the “Tonight Show,” Leno joked: “Well, in more serious news, the FBI is investigating New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez for allegedly soliciting Dominican prostitutes. So, once again, foreign workers doing the jobs Americans don’t want to do, right?”

Menendez’s office issued a statement Wednesday vehemently denying any wrongdoing by the senator, according to the Herald. Not surprisingly, Menendez’s people said the Daily Caller manufactured the whole story:

Dr. Melgen has been a friend and political supporter of Senator Menendez for many years. Senator Menendez has traveled on Dr. Melgen’s plane on three occasions, all of which have been paid for and reported appropriately. Any allegations of engaging with prostitutes are manufactured by a politically-motivated right-wing blog and are false.

It’s not that Menendez hasn’t been in the news at all. He has. In fact, the media has been fawning over him this week for joining other senators Monday in sponsoring a new immigration bill. And multiple sources reported Menendez is about to become the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Fabulous. If the Daily Caller reports lead anywhere, it may be a matter of time before we know just how experienced he is in “foreign relations.”
