Democratic Rep: Obama should have power like Lincoln did during civil war

Raising the nation’s debt ceiling without congressional approval is a good use of presidential authority, Democratic Ill. Rep. Danny K. Davis told The Daily Caller on Capitol Hill Friday. Davis said that President Obama should have the power to make that decision and compared it to President Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.

“Sometimes when we’ve gotten great answers is when presidents have had enough authority to take some actions,” Davis said. Citing the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Davis noted that if Lincoln had not “had the power, authority and the will to make that decision,” the war would have lasted longer and many more lives could have been lost.

“So yes, I think the president should have the ability to make that decision,” Davis said.

“Congress is never going to give up our ability to control the purse,” House Speaker John Boehner said in December. Boehner is opposed to giving Obama the authority to increase the debt ceiling without the approval of Congress. “The fact is the debt limit ought to be used to bring fiscal sanity to Washington, D.C.”

Davis denied the move as being a power grab, but said it would “give the president the kind of power that sometimes is needed for the decision-making that must take place as opposed to the haggling, the wrangling, the discussing, the disagreeing, the cliffhanging and all of those kinds of things.”
