Take our poll: Should we have an armed guard in every American school?

ayne LaPierreThe following was read by NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre at a National Rifle Association press conference held on Friday Dec. 21 featuring LaPierre and former Congressman Asa Hutchinson, who is heading up the association’s proposed National School Shield Program to place armed guards in every American school:

How have our nation’s priorities gotten so far out of order? Think about it. We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses — even sports stadiums — are all protected by armed security.

We care about the President, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by armed Capitol Police officers.

Yet when it comes to the most beloved, innocent and vulnerable members of the American family — our children — we as a society leave them utterly defenseless, and the monsters and predators of this world know it and exploit it. That must change now!

The truth is that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters — people so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons that no sane person can possibly ever comprehend them. They walk among us every day. And does anybody really believe that the next Adam Lanza isn’t planning his attack on a school he’s already identified at this very moment?

Obviously more guns is not the solution, any rational human being would know that, but what would any sensible person expect from the gun manufacturers and distributors lobby? Sell more guns! and the NRA did not dissapoint.

Lets see what you would do watching your wife, daughter, mother being RAPED in front of your eyes BECAUSE YOU DIDNT HAVE A WEAPON TO DEFEND YOURSELF like it states in the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution. IF ONLY THE PRINCIPAL HAD A HANDGUN TO SHOOT THAT MENTALLY ILL PSYCHO, WE WOULDNT BE WRITING IN THIS BLOG.

Guards, armed teachers and/or armed principals? Absolutely NOT! That said, schools need more officers. They need an officer at every elementary school and, in middle and high probably two minimally each. The school police can also act as mentors. (Many do that already.) It is time also to explore putting the school police under the sheriff. We cannot legislate crazy people off the streets, but we can make our schools safer.

We have had professionsl police officers, School Resource Officers. In schools around our country for years. They were always armed. I know cause I was one of them up north and in Florida. I'm sorry the world is the way it is. Needing armed officers to try and quell any volatile situation that may arise. Guarding the safety of young and teenage students and teachers. To serve and protect is a code that police officers in the USA live by. Most of us take that code very serious. As for the teachers being armed. With the approval of the state, county, city, school board, commisioners, and with an accredited firearms use and safety training by law enforcement agencies, academies. Why not? Its called a line of defense. A chance to survive. A chance to meet fire with fire, and perhaps, at least be given an option to save yourself and other lives. These firearms can be concealed on a person. No good locking it up, then trying to retrieve it quickly during an immediate crisis. This is something the populace of our USA , and even the world, should seriously study and hopefully see the value of such action. Firearms don't kill by themselves. It takes the evil or psychotic finger of a demented and cowardly individual to pull it, and kill people at random. Restrictions on firearms in the public will never be the answer. The bad guys will never be resticted, and yes. They will always find a gun. In the streets, black market, internet. It doesn't matter that we are in the year 2013. The second amendment should be upheld in earnest for responsible, back ground checked citizens of this country. Our kids lives and ours are at stake.

  4. Joe says:

No, the kids should carry their own guns. We have too many kids now!!!

      Interesting point of view, thanks!

I am MORE in favor of TRAINING Principals, teachers & any other pertenient workers, after EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND CHECKS of ALL at schools. In the places (liberals) rejecting this proposal, THEN have TRAINED, ARMED School Police Officers. We NEED VIDEO RECORDERS, BUZZ-INS, etc.,etc.

The REAL problem is NOT having the 10 COMMANDMENTS POSTED, Bible or Religious Studies after school….BASICALLY, CHANGE the HEARTS of our Youths. Make Hollywood contribute to a fund off the $Millions they make of the VIOLENCE they PROMOTE on TV & Movies. Yah, I know…no one MAKES you watch it, change the channel..yah, but kids are still being mentally formed & still seek "what is cool/bad". YOU BECOME WHAT YOU LOOK AT !!! GOD help us ALL in the MORALLY BANKRUPT U.S.A. The Kenyan, Marxist, MUSLIM so-called POTUS isnt any kind of example my children & grandchildren should or will look up to. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC !!

  6. Larry Clinton says:

I understand what you are saying – however just how do you suggest protecting the children. In most cases (dating back 75+ years) the persons that committed these atrocious acts were not on police radar for any reason. They were not called sociopaths until the act had been committed. As has been stated the ONLY way to deal with a bad guy with a gun (same can be said for a knife or firebomb or other destructive weapon) is a good guy with a gun. If you have any viable options that work – state them, because I sure don't. As to banning firearms – the criminal or sociopath doesn't care what is legal, does he. You might as well put up another sign at the "gun free" zones, stating "Criminals not allowed in with guns". Criminals are currently Illegally armed – how many do you really think will turn in there firearms if another law is passed?

  7. Concerned citizen says:

I read a comment that an armed guard at school is just like putting kids in prison…. Sure sounds better than piling all our kids in a barrel and rattling a high powered rifle off in it. guns are not the problem the people behind them are but until u get the people dealt with our kids need protected! and I know giving my kids a way to protect themselves is illegal so someone has to do it for them.

  8. Darline Kandalec says:

We could drastically cut down, if not eliminate entirely, the number of homeless and/or unemployed Veterans AND give our schools all the security the could ever dream of with one sweeping motion. But then, anything that makes good common sense is beyond the realm of the thought process of today's politicians.
