Dem. Sen. Menendez ‘illegal immigrant sex offender’ intern arrested

cc_menendez_immigration_121114_wgThere is a rather bizarre story coming out of New Jersey today. The Associated Press reported Wednesday on the arrest of an illegal immigrant, registered sex offender, college student who volunteered in the New Jersey office of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez. When U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were prepared to arrest Luis Abrahan Sanchez Zavaleta on an expired visa from Peru, the Department of Homeland Security told agents to wait until after the election on Nov. 6.

According to AP, an official working on the case said ICE agents “complained that the delay was inappropriate;” however, DHS said reports it asked ICE agents to delay arrest until after the election are “categorically false.”

Hhmm. Would it at all surprise you to learn the pro-immigration Democrat Menendez won reelection in N.J.?

The Washington Post shared a Wednesday statement from the communications director for Sen. Menendez:

No staff member responsible for managing the internship program had reason to believe, based on their interview process, that Sanchez had any criminal background or immigration issues. Clearly Mr. Sanchez sought to deceive our staff.

Upon notification from authorities of his arrest, Mr. Sanchez’s relationship with our office immediately ended. Senator Menendez was briefed on the situation today – and he is appalled. He has no tolerance for those who violate the law and expects the authorities to continue to prosecute the case.

Menendez told MSNBC that his office asks interns about their immigration status, but has no way of actually checking. He added that because Sanchez was a minor at the time, his office couldn’t have known about the sex offender status since juvenile court records aren’t publicly accessible.

In the interview, Menendez said this situation “speak[s] volumes about why we need comprehensive immigration reform, because we can’t know who is here to pursue the American dream versus who is here to do it damage.”

Sanchez was arrested on Dec. 6 and is facing deportation.
