Non-union crews turned away from storm-ravaged New Jersey

Hundreds of thousands of homes in New Jersey find themselves without power after Hurricane Sandy cut her huge swath through the Eastern Seaboard. These are the times when we’ve traditionally rolled up our sleeves to help our fellow Americans in need — or at least they used to be.

Utility workers from Alabama were turned away in New Jersey because they were non-union. Some returned home, others found a more welcome reception in New York’s Long Island.
