Allen West hosts town hall with Israeli deputy speaker

Congressman Allen West played gracious host to Danny Danon, Israeli deputy speaker of the Israeli Knesset, and at least 10 Israeli mayors who accompanied him to an event at Century Village in West Palm Beach Wednesday.

Israel is now confronted by a hostile Muslim Brotherhood-controlled Egypt on its southern border and a volatile Syria, now embroiled in a brutal civil war to its north, Danon, a military veteran, told the crowd. Compound these problems with a soon-to-be-nuclear Iran threatening to destroy Danon’s country, and you understand that Israel’s existence is in peril.

In his diplomacy, Danon tried not to be partisan in favor of Romney and avoided any outright criticisms of Obama during his talk. I could see The Palm Beach Post and the Sun-Sentinel headlines if he didn’t hold back: “Israeli leader slams Obama in order to aid Romney!” However, Danon’s concerns about Obama standing by Israel in any crisis were clearly evident. He repeatedly stated that Israel had to protect its citizens and would act in its own defense when push came to shove.

West went a step or two further with a slide show picturing the situation in the Mideast and the perils that a neutral United States imposes on the area. He called Obama to task for not standing up to Iran and its nuclear developments for four years. West tied in the growth of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt with the naiveté of the current administration and the inclusion in our own government of Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters.

What caught my attention, aside from West’s and Danon’s spectacular deliveries and the enthusiastic cheering and standing ovations of the crowd, was the lack of Democrats in attendance. No Obama buttons or signs. No questions from Democrats aimed at West. Apparently, the Democrats at this highly Democratic compound were told to avoid attending so as not to hear West’s terrific oratory and brilliance. Had they sat in on this meeting, they would surely have walked out sporting an Allen West button and t-shirt, together with a “Change of Party Affiliation” form.
