Anti-U.S. Muslim violence spreads to Sydney, Australia

Demonstrations and riots against the U.S. has spread beyond Northern Africa and the Middle East and has now gone “down under.” Saturday, a mob clashed with police outside the U.S. Consulate in Sydney, Australia.

Countries other than the United States are now voicing apprehension. European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said in a prepared statement, “I am following the unfolding events with grave concern and call on national authorities in all countries concerned to swiftly ensure the security of diplomatic mission and protect diplomatic staff.” She continued, “It is vitally important leaders across the affected regions should call immediately for peace and restraint.”

On Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “Reasonable people and responsible leaders in these countries need to do everything they can to restore security and hold accountable those behind these violent acts.”  And if those leaders in host countries don’t take adequate measures, she warned “we will … keep taking steps to protect our personnel around the world.”

The following video shows the level of violence Saturday at the American consulate in Sydney, Australia when it was engulfed by a mob of Muslims.
