Obama ahead in polls, despite deceit

My head is reeling, my mind is boggled, and I’m tightly gripping the armrests on my chair. I’ve just picked up the paper and read that with just a little over 100 days left before the Great Presidential Election of 2012, Barack Obama is still leading Mitt Romney by a single point in some national polls. Here we have the equivalent of a .220 hitter with a fielding average of .750 being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. And thinking he belongs! It just doesn’t make sense. A movie with that plot would never make it past the cutting-room floor.

President Obama catapulted to fame in the 2004 Democratic National Convention by artfully and dramatically reading his speech to open-mouthed delegates, many of whom had never heard of him before this event. “What a reader!” they exclaimed. Another headlined speaker was none other than Al Sharpton, who also had the throng jumping up and down at his magic words. Just a few years before, this thug was chasing Jews down Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn and firing up a gang that ended up burning down Freddie’s Clothing Mart in Harlem, incinerating eight people. You see, Freddie, who brought jobs to many in the neighborhood, was Jewish, but to Big Al, he was a “white interloper”! What an eventful convention the 2004 gathering was, bringing to the fore a dynamic duo: a future president and a prime-time, largely illiterate commentator for MSNBC.

Just how does Obama get away with it? How come he does not elicit laughs and knee-slapping from his daily audiences, for example, when he complains of jobs slipping overseas? Isn’t his multimillion-dollar campaign bus manufactured in Canada? And can’t Obama’s daughter find any place in the United States to spring break rather than in Mexico?  Was she working for Eric Holder, checking up on the armory we sent south of the border? And couldn’t Michelle and her whole entourage of friends, family, reporters and security have just hopped over to Florida for a seaside jaunt rather than outsource millions of bucks to Spain?

Am I being too harsh on this totally self-touted, “transparent” president? Do I expect too much from a guy who promised to “lower the waters of the ocean”?

All I want is a bit of honesty from the president. Let me watch and listen to just one of his many speeches and truly believe that he is telling the truth and not falsifying facts, figures or history. Perhaps he has never had to face up to people who demanded honesty. It could be that he was always coddled and never made to pay the price for misleading his infatuated followers. Truth to him was whatever he decided it was. If it helped him to climb up the ladder to achieve success or to convince the crowd, he could spout whatever he deemed appropriate for the occasion. Never a complaint or comeuppance for a garbled fact or historic reference. If he felt Israel was spawned out of the Holocaust, so be it. If the unemployment figure stands at 8.2 percent, he boldly states that the economy is improving and that he has created millions of new jobs over his term in office – with head held high and eyes staring right at you. Night is day and day is night to him.

We were all raised to believe that honesty and sincerity were traits not to be ignored. That’s what we passed on to our kids. Who was responsible for inculcating those virtues to the young and now middle-aged Obama? I wish we knew.
