More than 1,000 men and women of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are in town for Fleet Week Port Everglades, April 25-May 1 for the 22nd annual celebration of the maritime services.
Thursday’s opening ceremonies will be kicked off at 10am with the first of five U.S. Navy Livestream Broadcasts, that can be seen by “liking” the Navy Fleet Week Facebook fan page.
Community outreach projects are planned throughout the week, providing opportunities for the crews to say thank you for supporting our troops. Service members will participate in community activities including hospitals and schools visits, spending time with veterans, supporting a food bank, and landscaping and renovation projects.
Producer, Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Xander Gamble said the broadcast is designed to familiarize individuals from around the world with the capabilities, mission and service members in the U.S. sea services.
“This gives people the opportunity to see what Fleet Week Port Everglades and the Navy is all about,” he said. ” Even if they can’t come to Port Everglades they still have the ability to experience this event.”
“The Navy mission is far-reaching, and for the residents of an area not heavily populated with Navy and Marine Corps personnel, this gives us the opportunity to showcase what we do,” he said. “The Livestream – which is capable of showing individuals from around the world what Sailors do on a daily basis – is our effort to let everyone be able to see what Sailors, Marines and Coastguardsmen are doing in support of the nation in which they live.”
Each of the Fleet Week Port Everglades Livestream 10-15 minute broadcasts is scheduled to provide a look at the capabilities of the ships and highlight the skills of the service members manning the massive vessels. The broadcasts will include live interviews with sailors and Marines.
Social events will be held throughout the week, including a kickoff party at Seminole Hard Rock courtyard on Wednesday, April 25th at 6 p.m., and a “Rock the Boat” Block Party at Himmarshee Village on Thursday, April 26th at 8 p.m.
