PBS broadcast a six-hour television event over three nights Oct. 2-4 regarding Prohibition. Hopefully, the progressives will remember (after watching the documentary) that forcing behaviors on Americans is a really bad idea. Just for review, Prohibition — the ban on the sale of alcohol, beer and wine — was forced onto the American public by progressives, women’s suffrage leaders and various religious leaders. The plan was to ban the sale of alcohol, thereby reducing alcoholism and eliminating poverty. As with the vast majority of well-intentioned but poorly thought-out plans, instead crime skyrocketed, tens of millions of Americans broke the law, enforcement costs were astronomical and ineffective, and in the end, the entire body of laws failed. So what did the progressives learn? Obviously nothing! Today, they are attempting to increase regulations on everything: fats in foods, sugar, fast food, oil usage, oil exploration, drugs, legal drug development, carbon use, and on and on and on. I originally listed another 86 items and still had hundreds more possibilities, so I summarized a few concepts, but you get the idea.

Last week, it was reported that utilizing white paper indicates that the user of the paper is racist — and if that was not enough, this inherent racism is the reason that black children do not perform better in schools. Are you kidding? Well, I have spent the week working on the changes to our culture: Obviously, anything white indicates racism, so no more white cars and trucks, no more white houses, no more white napkins, no more white ice cream (Dairy Queen and Carvel), no more white envelopes, no more white paper in magazines, no more white anything. But it does not stop there: Clearly, anyone whose name is White will have to change it. And, of course, the White House can no longer be white! Before long, all minorities will pile on. And since everyone is a minority in the United States, the litigation will fly as it will. The lawyers will have a great time; the judgments will be of amazing numbers. Yet, this is truly ridiculous.

The match-ups by Republicans against President Obama are getting quite interesting. Only in a few cases does a specific Republican beat President Obama, yet in virtually every poll, “generic” Republican wins. So the solution is obvious: The Republicans need to find someone named Generic Republican to take on President Obama.

Moving along…. The far left is opposed to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie because he is fat. OK, there are many more fundamental reasons to question Christie. Let’s see, he has only been a governor for two years; three next November. Before that, he was a U.S. prosecutor. I do not believe that is sufficient experience any more than the three years of experience as a senator was for Barack Obama. Whomever the Republicans nominate for president, that person will need to be very experienced.

  • The DJIA looks like it will drop to 10,000 or somewhat lower before recovering.
  • Gold looks lower to me. It is highly unlikely that gold will exceed the highs again for the foreseeable future.
  • Interest rates continue to be ridiculously low, and should remain at these levels for a while.
  • The dollar looks much higher.
  • Oil has broken below $80, which suggests that oil is going back towards $60.
  • Real estate pricing is still falling in most markets.
  • The economy continues to appear to be weak.
