The ‘green monster’ in our midst

The Greek mythological Hydra was a serpent-like beast having many heads, and for each head cut off, it grew two more.

The Waxman-Markey bill, commonly known as “cap-and-trade,” was our country’s own “green monster.” Even President Obama, the bill’s main proponent, admitted that if it were implemented, “electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

It narrowly passed in the U.S. House almost two years ago, only to be figuratively beheaded in the Senate. Instead of staying dead as it should have, it, like the ancient hydra, grew two more heads, each every bit as hideous as the one it replaced.

The first was the Climate Change Fund being pushed by the United Nations. The Fund’s stated purpose is to “fulfill the Secretary-General’s 2010 call for nations ‘to fundamentally transform the global economy — based on low-carbon, clean energy resources.’”
The UN plans to meet its objective by taking from the developed nations (us), and giving to third-world, un-developed nations (them). In short, they want the third-world to share our wealth. In practice, we would end up sharing their poverty.

According to Sovereignty International, the funding scheme would include a carbon tax, an international transportation and shipping tax, a financial transaction tax and an electricity-production tax. Because the United States is a huge player in all of these endeavors, we would be the biggest loser, to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.

The only thing stopping the Climate Change Fund’s implementation in the U.S. is our own Senate. The power to ratify treaties (and this is essentially a treaty) resides solely with that body per our Constitution.

The second head that sprouted forth after “cap-and-trade’s” demise was the EPA’s recent attempt to, on its own, regulate greenhouse gases. In the early part of April, the Senate prohibited the EPA from “promulgating any regulation concerning, taking action relating to, or taking into consideration the emission of a greenhouse gas to address climate change.” However, I fear this battle has only begun.

I, like millions of others, breathed a huge sigh of relief after the disclosure of “ClimateGate.” Finally, I thought, we can put an end to all this “Global Warming” silliness and tackle our nation’s true ills. Finally we wouldn’t have to listen to Al Gore pontificate his pseudo-science, made-up figures and off-the-cuff statistics.

Obviously I underestimated the “Left.” Climate change is an issue they just won’t let go of, and one that they will never forget. We should never forget it either, lest the “Green Monster” devour us whole.
