Love and Hate in Palm Beach County

hate_by_monsterAny Republican who serves in any kind of leadership capacity receives hate emails. A lot of hate emails are anonymous, but many are not. On Wednesday, Margi Helschien, president of the Boca Raton Republican Club and vice-chair of the Republican Party of Palm Beach County, received the following email:

you are all so nervous about our wonderful President Obama winning again, that you are doing every kind of dance known to mankind. all you want to do is get rid of the middle class, and poor. if you are rich, then you are safe.

i do wish all of you lose your health insurance and your jobs. that is my prayer for all of you.

you are all mean, evil and selfish. i wish you all bad luck.

This email is slightly unusual, not just because it is signed, but because it was sent by an actual member of the Democratic Executive Committee of Palm Beach County, and I have confirmed that to be true, though I have decided to spare the woman public embarrassment by not publishing her name.

Because the real point of this post is not to illustrate the unreasonable hatred directed at good people by some Democrats, because to be fair, this kind of personal venom can at times be directed towards Democrats by some Republicans.

It was Helschien’s response that really caught my eye. I’ve always thought Helschien is the best ambassador the local Republican Party has, and she has proven me right once again. Read her response below and see for yourself:

10-26-09 #3486Dear DEC member,

We wish you nothing but good health and prosperity.

We wish you all of the blessings this grand experiment in freedom, the United States, has to offer.

We believe that America is the greatest country that has ever been. We believe it is a country that has offered more freedom, more prosperity and more human dignity to more people than any other country in the history of the world.

And we are Republicans because we want to keep it that way.

May God bless you, the state of Florida and these great United States.

Update: The woman from the DEC just responded to Helschien’s kind response with the following  bile:

it was, and could be again, if you all jumped into the ocean and swam to another country.

Political warriors and brawlers are important to both political parties. But even more important are leaders who can deliver a consistently positive message. We are trying to win the votes of our fellow Americans. We are not fighting a civil war.

So as much as I enjoy a good political street fight, and appreciate the value it brings to the table, I have always understood the limitations of political brawls.

What conservatism needs are more leaders like Helschein at all levels, leaders who can articulate the spirit of optimism and compassion that is the true conservative message.

Note: The emails published above are unedited by BPR and are exactly as written by their respective authors. The DEC member’s name was redacted by BPR, as was the email address.

Disclosure: I serve as the vice president of the Boca Raton Republican Club and consider Helschien a personal friend.
