2012; Inappropriate Possibilities On The Road Less Traveled

So government now has control over the Internet.  So what?  Why are conservatives making such a fuss about this, don’t they trust our government?  After all, this is America and what can go wrong?

Fast forward to September 2012…

Barack Obama is in trouble.  The election is just two months away, the economy is still in the tank and unemployment is stubbornly stuck at 10%.  The current state of world affairs is troubling, to say the least.  The Middle East is about to explode due to Israel’s decision at the beginning of the year to act on it’s own to prevent Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon.  As expected, the majority of Muslim nations have rallied around Iran and all involved have been gearing up for all out war with Israel, which could begin at any moment.  Obama has managed to come across as weak and ineffective throughout the crisis.

Adding to his misery are the two successful terrorist attacks on American soil in the past year, claiming the lives of over one hundred American citizens and Eric Holder’s Justice Department is no closer to resolving either attack.

Americans are scared and worried.  They’ve lost confidence in Obama’s ability to lead and are eagerly looking forward to November to express that sentiment at the ballot box.  Recent polls reflect as much, with the Republican challenger polling ahead of Obama by 10%.

In a White House campaign strategy meeting, there’s much angst over the most recent polls.  It’s becoming more and more clear that there’s just not enough time to affect circumstances for the better.  Several advisor’s begin discussing how far the Progressive agenda has been advanced in the past 3 1/2 years and how successful they’ve been in positioning like minded people in critical roles all throughout the federal government and what a waste of time it will all have been if the Republicans take back the Presidency.

Obama has been sitting there quietly taking all this in when suddenly he asks for the room to be cleared of all but his two closest advisors and trusted confidants.

Once they’re alone, he turns to them; “We’ve come too far and have accomplished too much.  We’ve got to do whatever it takes to hold on to our gains and keep the Republicans out of the White House.  It’s taken us almost 100 years to get to this point and we cannot lose it all because the folks are not intelligent enough to recognize all the good we’ve done for them.”

Speaking candidly, one of the advisors offers, almost jokingly, “the only way to be 100% sure that you don’t lose this election is for there not to be an election.”  This comment is followed by an eerie silence, which is eventually broken by Obama himself when he somberly asks, “how do we accomplish that?”

“Well, we create a significant crisis”, the advisor says, “and, in such a state of utter chaos, the country simply cannot afford to be distracted with an election and a possible changing of the guard.”

He continues, “we can accomplish this by introducing another round of quantitative easing, which not only will further undermine the dollar, which is near the breaking point already since the world replaced it as the standard last month, but is sure to provoke a negative response from the Chinese.  With the stock market already in serious decline over the impending Mid East war, once the Chinese announce that they’ll no longer be purchasing U.S. Securities, this is sure to bring on it’s collapse.”

“At which point”, he goes on, “you declare a federal state of emergency and announce to the country that you have no choice but to ‘temporarily’ postpone the election to allow the full force of the U.S. government to deal with the crisis at hand, all in the best interest of the future of America, of course.”

“The public would never stand for that”, Obama responds.

“Maybe not, but then again, maybe they will with a little help”, the trusted advisor says.  “We know that the Republicans will scream to high heaven, but we can spin that as political rhetoric in the face of a national crisis.”

“What we really have to be concerned with is the tea party, but the most active are only a small percent of the total population.  And how do they mobilize?  The Internet.  We shut down the Internet, due to all the misinformation going around that is only exacerbating the crisis at hand.  We keep it open for retail purposes, for the obvious reasons, but shut down all other web sites and email options.”

“Without the ability to communicate so readily and incapable of sharing the wealth of information available to play upon the emotions of the others who are not quite as engaged, those who are most active are suddenly rendered harmless.”

All the above is fiction, of course…possibly bad fiction, but it could never happen, right?  Or could it?

The professional pundits and legal scholars can easily pick the scenario apart for inaccuracies, but you get the point.  This nation was founded on a healthy distrust of government, rightfully so.  The key difference between Europe and America is in Europe, the people are servants of the government, here, the people are masters over the government.

It was Thomas Jefferson who said, “The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.”

The Progressive Left, including the current occupant of the White House, have no respect for this concept.  Nor have they shown much respect for the rules and protocol that has helped govern this land for decades.  Why then should we now trust that they’ll not abuse other powers granted in the ultimate pursuit of their agenda?
