Opt Out Day Victory?  Yes.

Yesterday was National “Opt Out” Day.  Airports nationwide and in Orlando (30,000,000 annual flyers, 109,000 projected yesterday per Sentinel) were relative ghost towns on the BUSIEST TRAVELING DAY OF THE YEAR.

See documentation and video from national organizers here… http://wewontfly.com/blog/ keeping in mind the national group’s long declared goal of winning hearts and minds to OPT OUT of flying until the DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and TSA Secretary John Pistole dramatically curtail their methods.

……………..

Yes, indeed, yesterday the TSA did curtail their methods because you and everyone else were watching.  Will they continue?

The people spoke as well, with their wallets and their actions.  They didn’t fly.  With DHS/TSA fear-mongering, especially using groping you and your kids or the $11,000 fine for “Opting Out” of the full body scan, how many of those good men, women and children were lost or hurt on the highways instead of in potential air calamities?  We won’t know but experts are arguing this is so.

We believe that the national and local media’s dramatic and comprehensive coverage of the National “WeWontFly.com” efforts may have been an important role in 92% of people driving versus prior year’s around 80%.  With fuel costs at historic highs and airfare costs at reasonable prices, this means this is much more than a simple anomaly and that the DHS/TSA are a real factor worth further exploration.

It is certainly conceded that the economy is a factor in people possibly not traveling but maybe not in their choice of flying versus driving.  The costs are not so different.

NOTE:   The Orlando Opt Out Day group was indeed asked to leave the airport last night.  While we think the Constitution should be our permit to help the TSA educate the public on their policies, we thank all of the OPD, OIA, TSA, and especially the two gentlemen with GOAA that were so professional with us.

As reported by Channel 9 and 35 on their evening reports, we could not be at the airport all day due to work.   Special thanks to Channel 35 for allowing us to debate the former TSA chief at length and to him for conceding on points about the body scanners not working as reported nationally for the last week and argued by the head of security at the busiest airport in Israel.

Minor correction from Channel 9’s favorable coverage, it was actually not a half dozen of us.  It was 11.  This is what we expected because of only 2 days to prepare.  We will have more at our next permitted event where we will set the record straight about what happened yesterday.  The people won.  They spoke loud and clear.  They OPTED OUT OF FLYING.  The TSA spoke loud and clear.   They OPTED OUT OF THEIR NORMAL PROCEDURES.

We wish all to know that we participated in this event because our consciences demand we honor the sacrifices of millions of lives for freedom.  We also will continue to argue that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and that Americans are saying, yes, we will accept risk to maintain freedom.

On behalf of the local members of WEWONTFLY.COM’S NATIONAL OPT OUT DAY and continuing efforts we will undertake to encourage to vote with their actions by not flying, thank you for your time and consideration.
