Engaged in Leadership Battle, Connie Mack Vows to Fight Illegal Immigration

Editor’s Note – Connie Mack has certainly been no friend to the tea party movement, nor the values it represents.  Yet, now that he has his eyes set on a run at the U.S. Senate in 2012, he’s hawkish on illegal immigration?

Here’s what he had to say about the Arizona law earlier this year;

“The new Arizona law strikes a severe blow to freedom and the principles that make our nation strong. This law of “frontier justice” – where law enforcement officials are required to stop anyone based on “reasonable suspicion” that they may be in the country illegally – is reminiscent of a time during World War II when the Gestapo in Germany stopped people on the street and asked for their papers without probable cause.”

Yes, he’s making a comparison to Nazi Germany!

Mack is seeking a leadership role in the new GOP majority and seems to be trying to walk back this statement.  He is up against Rep. Tom Price, who’s been on the leading edge in the fight against ObamaCare, for Republican Policy Committee Chairman.  This is an important position in the party structure and Price has proven himself to be the better choice.

Even if that is a set back for Mack’s senatorial ambitions.

Engaged in Leadership Battle, Connie Mack Vows to Fight Illegal Immigration

As he continues his campaign against U.S. Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., to become the next chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, the fifth ranking member of the GOP leadership in the U.S. House, Sunshine State Republican Connie Mack, touched on immigration on Monday.

Mack has raised eyebrows for opposing an Arizona-style law on immigration in Florida, but he called for secure borders in a memo he sent to his Republican colleagues in Congress.

“An important role of the Policy Committee chairman is to cultivate ideas within our conference and grow them into successful policies that will lead our nation,” said Mack. “While there are numerous issues facing our nation right now, there are five issues that merit our immediate attention in the next Congress, including border security. As Republican Policy Committee chairman, I pledge to my colleagues that I will work with them to pursue legislation that sticks to our core principles of less taxing, less spending, less government, and more freedom.”

Mack insisted in the memo, “Securing our borders, both north and south, is the responsibility of the federal government. We must remain vigilant, maintaining our ports and air transit systems with a fully-integrated homeland security system. As your Republican Policy Committee chairman, I will work with you to enact economically sound and prudent reforms aimed at stopping illegal immigration. We must cultivate a policy that secures our borders, promotes economic growth, and follows the rule of law.”
