This story is a follow up to my initial report about a private Christian school that was being threatened by bureaucracy. This school, which consists primarily of kids with learning disabilities who had to drop out of public schools, graduates the vast majority of its students and sends them to college. It was, however, faced with an hefty legal fine because of a mistake made in a previous school year by a student’s parent. The state scholarship program was withholding the six-figure funding sum for this upcoming school year until the school paid a five-figure fine. Go figure.
The school was days away from being closed down, simply because of a government inefficiency and bureaucratic tragedy that would have left many of these learning-disabled kids without much of an option to continue their education, requiring the school to close down and add its employees to those already numbered in our astronomical 9.5% unemployment rate.
When my friend, who is the principal of this school, first told me about the difficulty, I began making calls and posted the original story on the Orlando Political Press. There was no shortage of people who wanted to help. I called up a state representative who got his office working on it. We started talking with potential donors who had various educational interests who may have potentially pooled some funds together.
But right when the political and fundraising efforts began to make some headway, I got a call from the principal who told me that God had already answered his prayer and provided a donor who could supply the sum he needed to free up his state scholarship funding. He confirmed a few days later that he had a cashiers check payable to the state with the exact amount needed. Because of one individuals incredible generosity, he can keep his doors open.
Here’s the moral of the story, one that I believe is incredibly relevant in today’s world when so many people look to the government as the solution to every problem: the government doesn’t care about you. You can have the most compassionate mission, pulling kids off the street and helping them get into college, and the government will find any loophole and close you down to save a few thousand bucks.
In this story, the government is not the hero, nor is it compassionate. The hero here is the Christian man who had no affiliation with the school, who gave out of the kindness of his own heart to save this school from a statist numbers game that would have ended in disaster for these kids and families.
Yet so many people these days demonize “rich” people and cheer the government as it burdens the wealthy with higher and higher tax rates under an increasingly socialist plan of wealth redistribution. But this story confirms my suspicion that it’s not the poor who benefit from this wealth redistrubition, it’s the government ruling class that ultimately grows and prospers, at the expense of both the poor and wealthy citizens.
The school didn’t benefit because of the compassion of the government who took money from the wealthy and then gave it to them. No, this school’s doors are still open because of the generosity of a wealthy man who gave out of the kindness of his own heart to a school the government was trying to shut down to save money. In this case it was the rich guy who was generous and the state bureaucracy that was greedy.
