This Week's Rambling Thoughts; The Best Of Times, The Worst Of Times

As we wake up each morning and begin our day, we all share the same uncertainty as to what actually lays in store for us.  Fate, destiny and the hand of God all play a role in what actually transpires as we go about our daily business.

Rising to our feet, we shake off the grogginess of sleep, have that first cup of coffee and think about our schedule for the day; where we have to be and who we need to see.  As the caffeine starts kicking in, we begin to build a timeline in our head for the unfolding day, think about our goals and what we hope to accomplish.  Before we know it, it’s time to shower, dress and get on with the day.

Such was my day earlier this week.  First order for the day was a press conference, and I went through a mental checklist as I left the house to ensure that I was fully prepared for that.  I remember thinking that I felt hungry, as time did not allow for breakfast.  No worry, I thought, I’ll just grab a cup of coffee on the way and I’ll be fine.  Little did I know that fate had already dealt this card.  As I arrived at the location for the press event, my phone rings and it’s one of my fellow patriots and a dear friend who tells me she’s just around the corner and asks if I would like a bagel!

I remember thinking how blessed I am to be associated with such wonderful people, the best we have to offer as human beings.

Things begin to take shape quickly, and the day presents it’s second surprise, perhaps destiny at play?  It seems that the targets of our press conference have decided to make an unexpected appearance with dubious intentions to disrupt our plans.  I’m immediately confronted with baseless allegations and vile insults.  As events progress, I witness an act so evil that I was left completely dumbfounded.  I look back on it and can’t help but wonder if I did enough to come to the defense of another dear friend.

This friend is a champion at heart, full of vigor and spirit.  A friend who was given a unique challenge, yet, one would never know it when evaluating his zest for life.  A true patriot that understands that sacrifice and hard work are the keys to success.  As I think of him, I’m reminded again how blessed I am to be associated with such wonderful people.

A despicable individual had the sheer audacity to walk up to my friend, who is an amputee, and say “hello…I would shake your hand, if you had any.”  Clearly, the worst we have to offer as human beings…

As my day progressed, a colleague and I had a meeting with a gentleman who simply wanted to say that he recognizes the challenges that we face in this country and that he supports what we do.  As humbling as that may be, he then says, “I’m here to help, what can I do.”  No hesitation, no limitations and no conditions, just a generous appeal to get involved.  Again, the best we have to offer…

Whereas, this gentleman’s offer may not sound so extraordinary, it has been a rare occurrence in this struggle.   As grassroots ‘activists’, we make significant sacrifices to reach the level of effectiveness that we’ve come to enjoy.  It has necessarily become a full time job, without pay, leaving little time to actually focus on earning an income.  Not that I am complaining, it’s a conscience decision each of us make to put all else aside and concentrate on the current state of politics in America and strive for something better.  It’s an individual belief that our country is in dire straights and that now is the time to take a stand for the future of this great country.  Our founding fathers would have done nothing less…

It’s not that there haven’t been other offers to help, they come on a regular basis.  It’s just that they come with a price we are unwilling to pay.  Integrity is the most valuable commodity that we possess, yet, it’s amazing what is there for the taking when you choose to overlook your principles and ‘give a little to get a little’.  Truly, the worst we have to offer as Americans…

Back to my day, I leave this meeting and proceed to yet another meeting on the schedule.  There were several candidates speaking at this meeting, and it became clear that we are reaching a point of critical mass in this primary season.  I watched three men stand up in front of a difficult audience, putting all that they are and all that they represent at risk, and speak passionately about our country and what they have to offer to make this a better place for our children and grandchildren.  The emotion was palpable, you could feel it in the air.

I remember thinking, this is God’s hand at play…this is the best we have to offer as Americans!
