Did Bush and Cheney cause the disaster in the Gulf?

As the world sits and watches, oil continues to spew into the Gulf of Mexico.  It is a totally unfortunate event that appears to be a disaster that no one was prepared for.  Yet the finger pointing is rampant and in times like this, there should not be finger pointing, but rather a resolve to fix the problem and demonstrate leadership.  This disaster affects the lives of millions, including the wildlife that had nothing to do with it, and will continue to for generations to come. In the meantime, it appears that the Whitehouse is hell-bent on turning this situation into a blame game.

So who is to blame?  The 11 dead workers? Did they and those on the rig act to destroy the Gulf of Mexico and the coastline where they are from? Was it BP’s doing because they could care less and drill for huge profits?  Was it a conspiracy by the U.S. government for political gain in some strange way?  Maybe George Bush and Dick Cheney did it?

That fact is that it was a very unfortunate accident that most likely will never happen again and whose lessons should be learned by all of us.

Finger pointing never solves problems and from what I see, this disaster has turned into a political fiasco that serves nothing more than to delay resolution of the problem.  To believe that somehow those on the rig were responsible is a stretch unless you believe they are terrorists.  My heart goes out to all of those involved and their families.  To blame BP as somehow the evil villain here is just as reckless.  It is very likely that errors were made, and in the months ahead, we will know exactly what went wrong.  I see the constant barrage of Tony Hayward, the BP CEO, and I wonder if in fact he really meant to destroy the lives of millions. 

If you believe he is a member of Al-Qaeda, then you may be right.  I don’t see him in that light.  I see him as a human being struggling to handle one of the worst man-made disasters ever created on this earth.  He has made some comments early on that I am sure he would take back if he could.  I also saw a human being with bags under his eyes that said to me he is stressed out like everyone else and is not sleeping well due to the enormity of the situation.  He is trying his best to fix the problem all the while having to deal with a camera showing gushing oil 24 hrs a day, a barrage of criticism daily from the administration and media, and shareholders wondering what to do. 

Now he is called to testify next week before Congress in the midst of this crisis.  That makes a lot of sense. Why don’t we bring back Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire and have them testify too.  That solved our problems and served our country well.  I have seen many congressional hearings and they are nothing more than political grandstanding from what I have seen.  However, some are entertaining like Rep. Hank Johnson’s comments about Guam tipping over in front of the Admiral of the US Pacific Fleet.  If you have not seen his testimony,  click here for a good laugh.

We are now seeing the boycotts of BP gas stations.  Good call. Lets hurt more small business owners because they deserve to suffer as well and their employees.  I would love to ask one of those protestors if they would like to shut BP down.  Why? Run BP into the ground and who is left to pay the bill?  The American taxpayers.  Boycotting BP is a knuckle-headed idea at best.  At one point, some were calling for the US Government to take over BP.  What does the US government know about deepwater drilling?  Are they experts?  If they are, then why did they allow BP to drill down 5,000 feet and many other companies to do the same without a backup or contingency plan?  Where was the government oversight? Why were they drilling in 5,000 feet of water?  Did the political pressure push them out there?

And now we have a six month moratorium on drilling for oil proposed by the current administration.  How does this complicate our situation? It cuts tens of thousands of jobs in the region where they need it the most, the Gulf Coast.  It adds to our ballooning deficits as these people will need to file for unemployment claims, not to mention it also adds to our dependence on foreign oil.  It is a knee-jerk reaction that only complicates the situation.  The rig owners will not sit by for six months with no income.  The will move the rigs to other parts of the world and not come back for some time.  We have had one accident in the last umpteen years and now we have to STOP all together.  Get real!

One thing is certain in my mind.  The government will not be the one to solve this tremendous tragedy.  It will be BP, the American people, and innovative companies and individuals that rise to the occasion.  Not government.  Will there be abuses and people willing to exploit?  Absolutely there will be.  It is an unfortunate part of society we live in.  The government should be coordinating efforts and using its vast resources to solve this disaster.  Instead, they are using this disaster for political gain and vilifying BP and it’s officials.  Remember the liberal playbook.  Who was it that said “Never let a crisis go to waste”?  Don’t remember?  It was none other than Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s Chief of Staff.

I just wish they would start to lead our country and solve our problems rather than spending countless hours finger pointing.  Whenever I hear my kids blame others for their problems, I tell them to quit acting like a liberal and grow up.
