Poll: Scott Surges To 44-31 Lead Over McCollum

Editor’s Note – I think it may be time for the McCollum campaign to hit the panic button.  Even his supporters acknowledge that he is a ‘granola’ candidate, however, these numbers are probably a better representation on the anti-incumbent feeling that is sweeping across this nation.

When all things are equal, or even when they’re not, the American people are now consistently choosing the newcomer over the established politician – quite frankly, it’s a good indication that the electorate is in a foul mood and have seen enough of what the current politicians have accomplished.

As for McCollum, most agree he would be a ‘safe pick’, although, it’s beginning to look like he may be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Poll: Scott surges to 44-31 lead over McCollum

Rick Scott has surged to a 44 – 31 percent lead over Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum in the race for the Republican nomination for governor, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Scott, a former health care executive, began running television commercials this spring to introduce himself to voters.  “In addition to being a testament to the power of television, Scott’s ability to take the lead so quickly is also a reflection on McCollum’s lack of strong support within his own party despite his two decades in Florida politics,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Scott is now viewed favorably by 40 percent of Republicans; unfavorably by 12 percent and 46 percent say they don’t know enough about him to form an opinion.  McCollum, in his third statewide race and having spent a decade in Congress, is viewed favorably by 41 percent; unfavorably by 19 percent and 36 percent don’t have an opinion.

Even more bad news for McCollum, Scott now runs stronger against likely Democratic nominee Alex Sink than McCollum.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Florida shows Scott earning 45% of the vote versus Sink’s 40% support. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate, and 12% remain undecided.

McCollum’s support continues to fall. He now is in a virtual tie with Sink, leading her 40% to 38%. Eight percent (8%) favor another candidate, and 14% are undecided.

Last month, McCollum had a 43% to 35% lead over the Democrat.
