Ex-Florida GOP Chair Greer Arrested on Unknown Charges

JimGreerFormer Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) was arrested today. A small step in reforming the party, indeed. We need not forget this and remind existing and all future party leaders of the consequences of their actions,…or better yet, ensure people like this aren’t elected to their positions.

OVEIDO, Fla. — Former Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer has been arrested on unknown charges at his home near Orlando.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been investigating Greer after an audit found he awarded himself and his executive director a fundraising contract that paid them about $200,000.

Greer was arrested at his central Florida home Wednesday morning. Calls to the FDLE were not immediately returned. The Seminole County Jail confirmed the arrest.

Greer was forced to resign in January amid allegations of extravagant overspending.

Since then, he’s become the subject of a criminal investigation for income he earned from Victory Strategies LLC, a fund-raising company that kept 10 percent of all major donations it raised for the party. Greer owned a 60-percent stake of the company.

FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey and Statewide Prosecutor William Shepherd will have a news conference in Orlando later this morning to “announce a major arrest,” the state agency announced. It did not provide other details.

Greer was backed for the chairmanship job in 2006 by then-Gov. elect Charlie Crist, and an Orlando Sentinel analysis of party spending found Greer dramatically increased spending and the use of American Express charge cards during his three-year tenure.
