Parkland shooting students slam media for making them use their white privilege

Parkland shooting student survivors criticized the media for not also paying attention to gun violence occurring in minority communities Monday.

It was up to students to use their white privilege in order to shine a light on the violence the black community faces, student activists David Hogg and Cameron Kasky and others said while speaking on a question and answer session over Twitter, the Huffington Post reported.

Kasky believes the media paid more attention to the Parkland shooting because it happened to a rich white community, he said, while Hogg stressed the importance of the group working with minority communities.

“If this happened in a place of a lower socioeconomic status or … a black community, no matter how well those people spoke, I don’t think the media would cover it the same,” Hogg said during the Twitter question session. “We have to use our white privilege now to make sure that all of the people that have died as a result of [gun violence] and haven’t been covered the same can now be heard.”

Black activists have also echoed similar sentiments. More support has been given to the Parkland students than the activists who took to the streets during the Ferguson and Baltimore riots, activist George M. Johnson told The Daily Caller News Foundation previously.

“I started to think about this after George Clooney’s announcement. And it isn’t divisive to observe the difference in support from the media, from celebrities, etc. I think the FL kids are fucking awesome, but so are the kids in Ferguson and Baltimore and Chicago and more,” writer Roxane Gay tweeted.
