CNN analyst warns against releasing Nunes memo: ‘Are we going to be a democracy after today?’

A CNN political analyst had a meltdown over releasing the GOP memo alleging wrongdoing by the FBI, warning of “demagoguery and despotism” as he described President Trump as “a mafia boss gone mad.”

Sentinel Newspapers Executive Editor Brian Karem reacted to the debate on releasing the controversial memo on  Thursday’s “CNN Newsroom,” calling it a “tipping point for our democracy,”

CNN host Brooke Baldwin kicked off the discussion by stating that while House Speaker Paul Ryan is downplaying the memo’s significance, Trump has indicated the classified document could negatively impact special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

“And you’re hearing that from the F.B.I.,” Karem replied. “That is the most disingenuous piece of verbiage I’ve heard today.”

The House Intelligence Committee has voted to release the four-page document, compiled by the staff of Committee chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes, over the cries of Democrats who have been working to prevent its release. Karem equated the release of the document to a threat to democracy, and argued that the lack of “transparency” in the White House with limited press access is part of the problem.

“This is a tipping point for our democracy. Are we going to be a democracy after today, or is this going to be demagoguery and despotism?” Karem said, apparently forgetting the United States is not a democracy but is, in fact, a constitutional republic.

“The simple fact of the matter is, he talks about transparency, and this is an administration that hasn’t had a solo press conference in a year. They haven’t had a press briefing in the last week and a half. They don’t talk to the press. We have to go on the South Lawn to try and get in touch with the president and shout questions at him. That’s disingenuous,” the Playboy White House reporter continued.

“And by the way, if you’re going to be transparent, then you release the Democratic version of it as well. You release all of it, if you’re going to be transparent,” Karem went on. “This isn’t transparency. This is obfuscation. This is disingenuousness. This is simply, and nothing else, but a power play, a demagogue pushing back against the democratic process.”

Like the rest of his liberal cohorts, Karem apparently thinks the “democracy” he speaks of is established on the premise of preserving government secrecy when it comes to potential cases of official misconduct.

“And you’ve got the FBI — and you may say a lot of things about the FBI and I’ve covered them for 30 years — but corrupt? No. I’m sorry. They do their job and they do their job very well,” he added. “And if the head of the FBI that you appointed is telling you not to do this, you don’t do it. But he doesn’t care. This is a mafia boss gone mad.”

Ever committed to providing the facts, CNN’s host Brooke Baldwin chuckled at Karem’s rant and moved on to another guest.
