Twitter gives bad news to top Democrats: No, Russian bots are not behind the ‘Release the Memo’ movement

Sorry Dems, the “Russians” can’t be the scapegoat for everything.

Rep Adam Schiff and Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s hope that Russian bots were behind the “Release the Memo” movement have been dashed.

As news of a bombshell FISA memo circulated through social media, so did the demand that it be released.

The classified memo was drafted by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes and purportedly contains allegations that not only did top FBI officials actively work to discredit Donald Trump, but it may also reveal that the upper echelon of the FBI and DOJ were conducting illegal acts to rig the 2016 election in Hillary Clinton’s favor.

I believe there are people who will go to jail,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL.) said after reading the memo. Rep Jim Jordan of Ohio was equally upset and stated, “it’s so alarming the American people have to see this.”

“ReleaseTheMemo” began to circulate on social media as patriots got wind of the memo’s contents and demanded the classified document be revealed to the people.

The trending hashtag lasted for several days and is still going strong. It seems to have Democrats on edge.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) hit the liberal media circuit arguing that the American people should not be allowed to view the memo because 1) they wouldn’t be able to understand it and 2) it’s Russians who are pushing the movement behind the hashtag.

In a seemingly desperate attempt to quell the groundswell, Schiff and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) urged Facebook and Twitter to investigate the supposed Russian bots pushing the hashtag.

“If these reports are accurate, we are witnessing an ongoing attack by the Russian government through Kremlin-linked social media actors directly acting to intervene and influence our democratic process,” Feinstein and Schiff, wrote to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The Calif. Dems were relying on a report by the Alliance for Securing Democracy that claimed the hashtag became a favorite for Russian-sponsored Twitter accounts. The report did not mention Facebook, according to the Daily Beast.

And it looks like the jury’s in.

A knowledgeable source told the Daily Beast that Twitter’s analysis has found that they’ve only found authentic American accounts behind #ReleaseTheMemo. The source added that there’s been no indication, thus far, of Russian bad actors or bots driving the trend.

All Schiff and Feinstein had to do was get on Twitter and take a look for themselves:
