Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois announced Tuesday that she is expecting a baby, which will make her the first senator to give birth while in office.
Duckworth told The Chicago Sun-Times that she is expecting her second child in April, just a few weeks after she turns 50. “I feel great,” Duckworth said.
The Illinois senator will be just one of 10 members of Congress to give birth while serving in office.
Duckworth gave birth to her first child, Abigail, in 2014, before being elected to the Senate in 2016.
“As tough as juggling the demands of motherhood and being a Senator can be, I’m hardly alone or unique as a working parent,” Duckworth said Tuesday.
The senator had to undergo multiple fertility treatments while trying to conceive her second child.
“I’ve had multiple IVF cycles and a miscarriage trying to conceive again, so we’re very grateful,” Duckworth told reporters with regard to in vitro fertilization.
Duckworth is a veteran of the Iraq war. She also lost both of her legs while serving.
