Schumer said he offered wall as part of Trump deal, but here’s the real story

With the Senate unable to come to an agreement on a stopgap funding measure, a government shutdown went into effect Friday at midnight and now the blame game begins.

As the clock struck midnight, the White House released a statement tagging the running out of money the “Schumer Shutdown,” saying that “this is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer countered to claim he offered funding for the much talked about border wall, but President Donald Trump still walked away from a deal.

Schumer and Trump reportedly met over cheeseburgers at the White House in the hours leading up to the shutdown in what proved to be a doomed attempt to strike a deal.

“During the meeting, in exchange for strong [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] protections,” Schumer said from the Senate floor, “I reluctantly put the border wall on the table for the discussion. Even that was not enough to entice the president to finish the deal.”

But given the New York Democrat’s history of playing loose with the facts, is that what really happened?

With the Democratic Party sacrificing the funding of the federal government, which includes the military, in favor of amnesty for foreign nationals in the U.S. illegally, what happened was more in line with the cartoon character Wimpy in the comic strip Popeye: “I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.”

Maybe.

In effect, Schumer wants DACA immediately, in exchange for the “possibility” of discussing funding for the wall at a later date.

And while much of the media ran with the claim, social media users were not as quick to go for the bait.
