Joe Arpaio gets personal with Judge Jeanine: ‘It took me 75 years to find a hero, and that’s the president’

Former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio says he’s running for senator at age 85 because he wants to fight for the people of Arizona and to back President Trump’s pro-America populist agenda.

“I want to keep fighting for the people in Arizona,” Arpaio told Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro. “I have been doing it for 30 years as a top federal DEA in Arizona, plus 24 years as sheriff. I’ve got 30 years serving the people of Arizona.”

But Arpaio also wants to be a senator so he can support President Trump, who has been obstructed by Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans as he tries to crack down on illegal immigration and build a border wall.

“I supported the president in July of 2015, and I have been with him since then,” Arpaio said. “I never had a hero in my life. It took me 75 years to find a hero, and that’s the president. I am going to go to Washington to support his agenda and his policies. They all relate to Arizona. I’m going to fight for Arizona, I’m going to fight for the president, and I’ll fight for the nation.”

Arpaio raised eyebrows by announcing he plans to run for the U.S. senate seat occupied by John McCain, who’s battling brain cancer. McCain, 81, has been senator since 1986. He has not revealed if he’ll vacate his seat yet, but his health crisis could force him to.

Judge Jeanine then asked Arpaio about the presidential pardon he was granted in August 2017.

President Trump pardoned Arpaio, who was convicted of criminal contempt in July 2017 for defying a federal court order demanding he stop traffic patrols that allegedly targeted Latinos suspected of being illegal aliens.

For 24 years, Joe Arpaio was the sheriff of Maricopa Country in Arizona, a border state where illegal immigration is a huge problem that has brought a tsunami of illegal drugs and violent gang members into the state.

Arpaio said he’s astounded that liberals and the mainstream media are attacking President Trump’s efforts to halt illegal immigration and build a wall along the Mexico-U.S. border.

“They ought to be thanking the president!” Arpaio said. “I don’t know why all this heat is going on because he’s talking about DACA and illegal immigration. Everybody should be thanking him for trying to get to the bottom of this.”

In addition to costing U.S. taxpayers billions every year, illegal immigration and the lack of a border wall is responsible for the tsunami of illegal drugs pouring across the border.

“I have been covering that border for [30] years. The wall is needed to keep the drugs out of our country,” Arpaio said. “Nobody talks about that except the president, about the drug problem destroying our nation.”
