Conyers accuser: Dem. Rep. brought up slain intern Chandra Levy when she rejected his sexual advances

The John Conyers case keep getting stranger.

One of the women who accused the former Democratic Congressman of sexual harassment told the Washington Post that when she refused Conyers’ sexual advances, he eerily brought up Chandra Levy–a Washington, D.C. intern who was found murdered in 2002.

Courtney Morse said the subject came up when she served as an intern for the former Michigan lawmaker. He had driven her home when he expressed his desire for a sexual relationship, holding her hand in his lap.

Morse refused, prompting Conyers to make what she believed may have been a threat.

“He said he had insider information on the [Chandra Levy] case,” Morse allegedly recalled. “I don’t know if he meant it to be threatening, but I took it that way. I got out of the car and ran.”

Morse claimed the experienced led her to quit her paid summer internship with Conyers.

Chandra Levy was a young intern at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington who disappeared in 2001. Her body was discovered a year later.

Soon after Levy was found dead, the media focused on her affair with Congressman Gary Condit (D-CA), who served as a senior member on the House intelligence committee.

Condit was never named as a suspect by police, but the ordeal tarnished his reputation, leading to a lost reelection bid in 2002.

The primary suspect in Levy’s murder, illegal Salvadorian immigrant Ingman Guandique, had the charges against him dropped after appealing his case.

It’s unclear what Conyers might have meant with his allusion to “insider information” on the Levy case if Morse’s claims are true.

Conyers resigned from Congress on Tuesday, although he referred to it as “retiring.” He has chosen his son, John Conyers III, to succeed him.

The younger Conyers is a political neophyte who once attempted to be a rap artist.

Conservative Americans have generally received Conyers’ resignation with enthusiasm.
