The initial news that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, and would testify that then-“candidate” Donald Trump instructed him to contact Russian officials, broke during Friday’s live ABC airing of “The View.”
And for a few minutes there, it seemed like Christmas had come early for co-host Joy Behar, who was beside herself.
As she read the breaking news note given to her by a producer, Behar’s voice gradually lifted, ending with a rapturous “yes!” as the liberal audience cheered wildly.
“‘Michael Flynn promised full cooperation to the Mueller team and is prepared to testify that as a candidate Donald Trump directed him to make contact with the Russians,’ yes!” Behar said, lifting her arms into the air and shouting, “Yay. He goes to jail! He goes to jail! He goes to jail! Lock him up!”
Even co-host Meghan McCain, seemingly blindsided by the news, told Behar to “Take this moment, Joy, take this moment. I give this to you.”
The panel then discussed the implications of a potential Trump removal from office, with McCain noting that it would likely “tear the country apart.”
Only one problem with the ABC News report: There is nothing to implicate Donald Trump did anything improper when Flynn reached out to the Russian ambassador.
ABC News got major egg on its face over the false report that Trump was a candidate at the time, which sent markets tumbling.

Trump was President-Elect at the time of the Russian contact, and therefore, it was not improper for the transition team to reach out to the foreign government.
Behar nonetheless expressed her desire that the news lead to Trump resigning instead of being impeached.
“It should lead to resignation. I remember Richard Nixon, and Richard Nixon stepped down, and so should Donald Trump,” she said. “On election night, I had to wear a veil, I was in mourning. So this is like the antithesis of that hideous night, and that is why I am happy.”
“It’s a happy day, come on. If he is going to be taken down for what he did and this country can start to heal, and parties can work together like Meghan wants it to, then that is a happy day,” Behar said.
ABC later corrected its initial report to state that it was president-elect Trump, not candidate Trump, who instructed Flynn to contact Russia, and it was only to “repair relations” and work “jointly against ISIS.”
In other words, stuff that any incoming presidential administration would be expected to do, not somehow collaborate with Russia to intervene in an election that had already been won.
Michael Flynn will get his comeuppance for inexplicably lying to the FBI about a perfectly legal act, but unless it’s become illegal for incoming administrations to talk to a foreign power, it looks like the Grinch may have stolen Joy Behar’s early Christmas gift.
