Mark Steyn destroys San Fran’s sham Steinle ruling: ‘Miscarriage of justice in the profoundest sense’

Conservative commentator Mark Steyn joined a chorus of voices in condemning a San Francisco jury’s decision to acquit the illegal immigrant who killed Kate Steinle.

Steyn called the verdict a “miscarriage of justice,” echoing the sentiments of many who were shocked by the outcome of a case that ignited a national debate over illegal immigration and sanctuary cities and played a major part in President Donald Trump’s election campaign.

The 32-year-old Steinle was shot and killed in the sanctuary city of San Francisco in 2015 by Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, a 45-year-old illegal immigrant who had been deported five times. On Thursday, the seven-time felon was found not guilty by a California jury.

“I think it is a miscarriage of justice in the profoundest sense in that Kate Steinle is dead because she went for a walk in a popular destination in her own city and her parents will never see anybody convicted for that crime,” Steyn said Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,”

“There’s no dispute — I mean, this is slightly different from the O.J. [Simpson] case, where he pretended to look for the real killers for the last 20 years,” he added. “There is no dispute that this guy actually fired the shot, or picked up the gun that then shot itself and that this gunshot killed Kate Steinle. And there’s no dispute either that this man should not have been in the country and in fact, he had been deported six times.”

In fact, Zarate had been released from a San Francisco jail just a few months before the shooting, which he admitted to but maintained was an accident.

“You don’t need to import foreigners to add to your murderer population,” Steyn said, calling Zarate a “life-long, career criminal.”

Conservative columnist and New York Times best-selling author, Ann Coulter, had declared that Steinle “would still be alive if we had a wall” between the U.S. and Mexico in a series of tweets reacting to the jury’s decision Thursday. Trump, not surprisingly, called the verdict “disgraceful.”

Steyn denounced the political posturing that seemed to be behind the jury’s decision that Zarate was not guilty of first or second-degree murder or even assault with a firearm, opting instead to convict him of being a felon with a firearm.

“Why is one political party, the entire bureaucracy and two-thirds of the remaining political party fetishizing and sentimentalizing immigrants who can’t speak the language, with a grade two education, and setting up competing jurisdictions in this country that protect them at the expense of American citizens?” Steyn asked.

Carlson noted that it was “hard to imagine” that an American citizen would have been acquitted of the same charges, suggesting that Zarate was afforded special treatment because he is an illegal immigrant.

“I weep for Kate Steinle’s parents tonight,” Steyn added. “I do not know how I could go on living in that city if, God forbid, my daughter were to be shot by someone who never should have been in the country in the first place.”
