Face palm: Liberal college to hold antisemitism panel … and invites Linda Sarsour

Liberals are discovering that the alliance between their demographic groups is weaker than they thought.

The Democratic party has long been the political home of most Jewish Americans. But the left’s embrace of Islam maybe putting that long-time relationship in jeopardy.

The divide is cracking open in response to an antisemitism panel being organized by progressive university The New School. The Tuesday forum, titled “Antisemitism and the Struggle for Justice,” is set to feature pro-Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour, Washington Times reports.

Joining Sarsour are two representatives for the anti-Israel group Jewish Voice for Peace. Sarsour’s pro-Palestine, anti-Israel reputation precedes her, provoking backlash from pro-Israel liberals.

Jonathan Greenblatt, a former Obama White House aide who currently heads the Anti-Defamation League, tore into the New School’s Decision.

“Having Linda Sarsour & head of JVP leading a panel on #antisemitism is like Oscar Meyer leading a panel on vegetarianism,” Greenblatt wrote. “These panelists know the issue, but unfortunately, from perspective of fomenting it rather than fighting it.”

The Anti-Defamation League CEO went on to call the speaker pick a “sad day” for the New School.

Kenneth Bialkin, a major donor to the university and chairman of the America-Israel friendship league, wrote a letter threatening to cut off his contributions unless the event is canceled.

“I am proud of the New School’s history as a refuge for scholars who fled Nazi Germany, including Jewish thinkers like Hannah Arendt and Leo Strauss,” Bialkin wrote. “However, I must question my commitment to continued investment in a university that has seemingly institutionalized the anti-Semitism of the radical left.”

A newly-formed group known as the Zioness Movement has gone so far as to gather 18,000 signatures condemning the “noxious event,” which it claims has the “sole purpose of excluding Jewish and Zionist voices from the left.”

Rebecca Vilkomerson and  Lina Morales of Jewish Voice for Peace and Leo Ferguson of  Jews for Racial & Economic Justice are the speakers accompanying Sarsour.

Jewish Voice for Peace, backed by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, has supported Rasmea Odeh, a Palestinian terrorist convicted for the murder of two Hebrew university students. The group has also encouraged anti-Israel boycotts.

Progressive journalist Philip Weiss is worried about what this panel means for the American left.

“The panel is important because Linda Sarsour represents the main threat to the Democratic-left consensus in support of Israel today: the real possibility that the Democratic Party might begin to reflect its progressive base, and call for sanctions against Israel,” Weiss said.

Democrats are learning you can’t serve two masters. Eventually, they’ll find themselves forced to choose between American Jews or their new Muslim voting block.
