After enduring intense scrutiny in her last reelection campaign over her use of a private plane, Dem. Sen. Claire McCaskill has worked to hide her family’s flight activity.
McCaskill ordered her husband to “sell the damn plane” after she was scrutinized for using the aircraft, at the expense of taxpayers, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
But she purchased another, more expensive, airplane after she won reelection in 2012.
With the 2018 elections approaching McCaskill does not want more scrutiny on her taxpayer funded travel itinerary.
The company that the senator hired to fly her 2009 Pilatus PC-12/47E contacted the Federal Aviation Administration in April to ask that the tracking information on that aircraft be hidden from the public, the Beacon discovered via email records obtained in a Freedom of Information Act request.
It used to be much tougher to hide flight information from the public and required a “certified security concern” but, after changes made by the administration of President Obama that made it “make the aircraft blocking process as simple as possible.”
A spokesman for the FAA told the Beacon that, despite the fact that it is simpler to do, it is uncommon for aircraft owners to ask to have flight information blocked.
According to the Beacon report, McCaskill used the private airplane on the 2012 campaign trail and, in three months, spent nearly $21,000 to do so.
The plane is owned by McCaskill’s TLG Aviation LLC and managed by Aero Charter, who made the request to block flight information in April, according to the Beacon.
Records showed that a top executive at Aero Charter made a $1,000 donation to McCaskill’s reelection campaign.
