Trump was set to visit North Korean DMZ, when last second ’emergency’ prevents ‘surprise trip’

President Donald Trump reportedly tried to make a surprise visit to the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Wednesday, but the plan was aborted due to inclement weather.

There has been significant speculation surrounding Trump’s trip to South Korea, part of a two-week tour of Asia that will take him to five different countries. South Korean media, noticing certain trends in preliminary planning, suggested that Trump was considering visiting the tense border between North and South Korea during his visit, but White House officials later leaked to the press that the president had no plans to do so. Trump left the possibility shrouded in mystery, telling reporters, “You’ll be surprised.”

A trip to the DMZ was not on the president’s itinerary and had been dismissed by the White House at the end of last month, but the White House intentionally kept the trip to the DMZ, which was planned well in advance, a secret. The visit to the border was, however, thwarted by bad weather.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Vice President Mike Pence all visited the DMZ in Korea.

Trump is “pretty frustrated” he wasn’t able to travel to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un’s doorstep, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders revealed. Marine One flew most of the way there before turning back because of mist and low visibility.

Trump will soon deliver a speech — presumably on North Korea — to South Korea’s National Assembly. What he intends to say is anyone’s guess as the president has been somewhat inconsistent in his rhetoric on the North Korean regime.
